The Great Turning
Shifting Toward A Life Sustaining Civilization: An Evening with Joanna Macy
Friday, October 10, 2008 * 7:00 - 9:00 pm * $8 Brookline High
School, 115 Greenough Street

World-renowned Buddhist scholar, eco-philosopher, author, and teacher
Joanna Macy has called the current and crucial shifting from our
industrial growth society toward a life-sustaining civilization "the
essential adventure of our time". Like a growing number of people, she
calls this adventure "The Great Turning". Tonight, through a mixture of
inspiration and insight drawn from Buddhist philosophy and the science
of general systems theory, she will reflect on the structural causes of
the ecological and social crises we now face. In addition, she will
provide examples of ways we are beginning to create structural
alternatives in our own lives, understand the world as our larger living
body, and untangle from the assumptions and attitudes that now threaten
the continuity of life on Earth. Macy believes that whether or not
corporations or corporate-controlled media outlets recognize it yet, a
new, necessary, and life sustaining revolution is already well underway.
Join us this evening as we learn ways to help the great turning gain
ever increasing momentum.
