Professor Jenks came to GCC in 1998 with a wealth of experience in the field of mental health and social work. First hired as Program Coordinator of the Human Service Program, Professsor Jenks revamped the Human Services curriculum and has taught all of the required courses in the program, as well as several courses in psychology. Social justice has always been a theme in her work and after the onset of the Iraq War, she created a Liberal Arts Option in Peace and Social Justice Studies. Offered in this Option are the Introduction to Peace Studies, Conflict Resolution and Mediation, Psychology of Peace, Conflict and Violence and Peacemaking in Practice: Seminar in Nonviolence and Social Action.
The title of Abbie's talk: Peace Studies: A Gift of Transformation. "The theme is my personal spiritual path that emerged as I was creating the Peace and Justice Studies Program at GCC. "
Robin Lane, who also lives in Bernardston, will be singing and playing guiter: two songs of peace. She puts poems to music and does so with poems written by women who are survivors of domestic violence as part of her work.
Diana Roberts will play the piano: a song she put to a poem that her mother wrote. It is our Peace and Social Justice Studies theme song. It's called Peace is a Gift.
Some students from the Peace and Justice Studies Program will also be present.
